Obtaining a Medical Marijuana Recommendation/Card
Purchasing any form of marijuana in California’s dispensaries before January 1, 2018 requires a doctor’s recommendation in the form of a letter or a card. Your primary care physician, or any physician, can give you such a recommendation. However, many physicians are still reluctant to do so because they may know little about the potential benefits of cannabis or about the specialized paperwork it requires.
They may also be concerned about sanctions potentially imposed by the federal government if their organization receives federal funding. If your physician is unwilling to provide a recommendation for you, you can obtain a card from a variety of on-line sources. Several of these are listed below.
Once you have obtained a doctor’s recommendation you may visit a dispensary (also listed below) where a wide range of products, both psychoactive and non-psychoactive, are available. Dispensary employees are trained to provide information on the various products and to make suggestions. However, their primary role is to sell products and they usually do not have medical training.
To get more personal guidance we believe you may find it most helpful and more cost effective in the long run to get your recommendation from a medical practitioner who specializes in cannabis treatment (some local ones are listed below). While you will pay more initially to get a card from these practitioners, they will work with you, including follow-up visits, to find the best products and optimal dosing to meet your personal medical needs.
